Pilot: Where no man has gone before
Bill & Leonard
Bill, meet Leonard Nimoy", Gene said. "He will be playing the alien character, Spock". Bill checked out the tall, black-haired man with a very stern face and smiled.
"Hello! Call me Bill".
They shook hands, while Leonard also looked attentively into his new colleague's open face, as if weighing something in his mind.
"Nice to meet you", he finally said, ceremoniously.
"Well", Gene rubbed his big hands and smiled uncertainly, "here we are. Bill will be our Captain Kirk".
Bill caught himself still staring at Leonard and turned to Gene. "Yes", he made a little laugh, "I can't wait to start. And you promised me, Gene, that that'd be a hit". He patted his shoulder, and also shot a look to Nimoy. Somehow he felt that Leonard didn't approve of him - or was it just his imagination?
They started shooting on a hot and soggy day of July, 19, with a couple of days of delay which made everyone on the set a little nervous. Except for Bill. After reading the sсript he for some time pondered over the brave captain’s character, and decided that the best way to play him would be not to play. Bill wasn't sure that he could maintain the character during the whole series if he'd make him too much different from his own self. And just being himself always did the trick. So be it: James T. Kirk, the nobler, braver and better side of William Shatner. That felt good, oh yes, it did.
"Hello! How's it going?" Bill announced loudly his appearance in the dressing room. "Gooood morning, Len, wake up! May I call you Len?"
It was seven in the morning, and Leonard opened his eyes slowly and looked askew at Bill. He was half-lying in his chair, with two pointed ears applied and only half his eyebrows at their place.
"I think if I say 'no', that won't help", he said in his monotonous voice.
"Why?" Bill laughed and flopped in his chair. "Do you think I'm some kind of a rude farm oaf who keeps ticking everyone off?"
"Not at all", Leonard said politely.
"Fine", Bill answered. For a couple of minutes his sunny mood was troubled. This time he was sure that Leonard didn't like him, and he just couldn't get - why? Now, that was unfair!
"Hey!" he called from his chair. "Leonard".
Leonard opened his eyes again and said "Yes" in a not particularly happy tone.
"Of course, I've read the sсript and Gene told me about his concept, but I want to hear from you. What do you make of your alien? You know, I've thought about Kirk, and he is a hero and a womanizer and a good guy, just like myself - "
Leonard snorted, but kept a straight face.
" - and it's all pretty clear to me", Bill continued without noticing it. "But I can't really get this Spock character, so can you tell me, what's he about? Because if this pilot will make it into a regular - "
"Bill".
"Yes?" Bill caught himself in the mid-sentence. "Yes, I am all ears", he sincerely smiled at Leonard who looked back, now even more solemn. After a moment Bill got his mistake. Ears. 'Oops', he said to himself, and to Leonard, "I am listening", beaming charmingly.
"Well", Leonard clasped his fingers. "Spock is an alien, a Vulcan. Vulcan culture is based on logic, and emotion is considered indecent. Spock has additional issues because he is half-human: his father is a Vulcan, and his mother is an Earth woman - "
"I'm wondering, how did they do that?" Bill blurted out without thinking.
"Did what?"
"You know, a baby. Aliens must be different in that way, mustn't they?"
"Vulcans are humanoid", Leonard said earnestly. "They are very similar to humans".
"Oh", Bill said. "Are you sure?"
Leonard frowned. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, did you check?" Bill asked innocently.
"Check what?" Leonard asked. Bill looked at his puzzled faced and just couln't help laughing. He laughed till the make-up man snapped at him. "Bill, stay put! Or you go to the set with mascara all over your face!" Finally Bill managed to choke back laughter, and captain Kirk got his first make-up right.
The velour shirt itched terribly. Bill scratched his neck once again, which gained him an amused look from Leonard. His colleague seemed to have no problems with his costume or make-up or ears. He was so reserved that it almost made Bill sick. Why the hell did he behave as if he was born with this stupid haircut and bushy eyebrows? As if he’d spent years on this starship – I mean, set?
They had been shooting the pilot episode for the new show for seven days now. Bill’s first impression of Leonard had been of a closed, unfriendly person, some kind of a nerd who couldn’t connect with people. By now Bill knew that he’d been wrong. Leonard was rather friendly with Gene, and executives from Desilu, and other actors, and the cameraman, and the cinematographer, and the make-up guys, and with the lady from the nearby cafeteria. With everyone, actually. Except from Bill.
That was kind of offensive, Bill thought a plenty of times in the past days. He tried so hard! Every morning he showed up in the dressing room, cheerful and energetic as ever, and also strove to inspire Leonard, but failed every time. That guy didn’t want to make a polite conversation about family, or children, or work, or Bill’s dogs, or horses, or motorbikes. Sometimes it seemed to Bill that the man didn’t have any interests in his life at all! Leonard just kept meditative silence while Bill sweated his guts out to bring him to life, or gave only abrupt answers.
Maybe the man was just too sensitive, and was offended by that innocent remark Bill made on the first day about how Vulcan pride depended on the size of one’s ears? But that couldn’t be it, that was just a joke! -
Again, Bill scrubbed his neck under the collar. Whose idea was to put them into this damn uniform on a hot summer day in California? The corner of Leonard’s mouth twitched – and that was the moment when a bubble lightened up in Bill’s head.
The chess scene was one of the last they were shooting. They rehearsed it a couple of times.
“ – so, Bill, at first you look at the screen, then after Leonard’s second line you turn to him – “, the director kept explaining. Bill nodded. Leonard sat on his chair with his arms crossed. For some reason the director didn’t explain the scenes so much to him, but mostly to Bill – but, after all, Kirk was the main hero here. “Are we ready?” he asked. “And – action!”
Bill stared at the empty screen where later a special effect would be added.
“Your move, captain”, Leonard – Spock – said.
“Should’ve intercepted by now. Bridge said they’d call.”
“I’ll have you checkmated your next move”, Spock – Leonard - said calmly.
Bill turned to him and allowed a grin to brighten all over his face. He laughed. “Have I ever mentioned you are playing a very irritating game of chess, Mr. Spock?” he asked gently, and kept beaming as if he’d just won a Derby. And amazingly, that made the trick. Leonard, who had to keep Spock’s straight face, also smiled a little, and didn’t even catch himself doing so.
“Cut! Leonard, okay. Bill, stop grinning, you are a starship captain, not a cabaret singer. Let’s go one more time!”
Bill relaxed his face muscles. Damn yes, he was the captain. And the trick was that Leonard didn’t smile at Bill, and didn’t even like him. But Spock was willing to smile at his captain – and the hell Bill won’t use this trick again!

“ – so, Bill, at first you look at the screen, then after Leonard’s second line you turn to him – “,
"Do you think, I'm some kind of a rude farm oaf who keeps ticking everyone off?"
посмотрела в словаре, "сначала" будет и "first", и "at first"
